Once installed, it was easily recognized on the network, but I haven't used it enough to know how reliable it is under load. This is extremely easy to install the drives, and understand instructions, but very slow setting up and formatting the drives.

I brought this primarly to backup my computers it takes entierly to long with the NAS200's integrated processor.I think saving abit more money would yield better results in the long run. You get what you pay for.This machine is fine for hosting small files such as pictures and such but if you looking to stream information from it you might want to look for something with a bit more processing power. Even using a gigabyte connection any type of streaming will lag.
- If I play music from my Sonos system and if a screen saver attached to images in the image store kicks in, music cannot play.- Don't do any administration while accessing files from the share -- only one of them can function at the same time.Overall, if you want a network store and performance is not an issue, then this will fit your bill. So, I just set this up directly on my ethernet adaptor. Even though this is connected to a network, it doesn't really behave like one. The user interface is not the most intuitive, but passable.
I bought this with the following objectives:- Central music storage for access by my Sonos system (Sonos BU150 Multiroom Music System) without keeping the computer on.- Central storage for accessing documents from my home network- Storage for Images, again accessible from all machinesI initially both just one 1.5 TB drive for this.Administration and Setup: For the most part, this was quite straightforward. However, if you plan to use this as a network storage device being accessed by multiple people at the same time, don't bother. Some obsevervations:- Don't both trying to copy files to/from this device from more than one computer at the same time. I initially set this up for access through a HD-PLC Ethernet Adaptor.
Problems with Performance: While this unit is very much functional, it has some serious performance limitations. The product behaves just like it's pricepoint -- cheap. However, that was too slow. Now I had better performance.
Keep it on a UPS. How should it be any different, I do not think there is space for cooling fans in the unit.I have also had a superstitious fear of Seagate drives for the last couple of years. I unplug the thing and 'Power' and 'Full' blink. That is odd, it was less than 1/4 full before. Maybe it's a bad omen that just after my wife's HP Touchsmart suffers a disc crash (it had a Seagate drive), this thing does its final bow. I just finished copying all the data over (I made a backup to an old harddrive halfway through) when today I can no longer browse to the unit. He gives me the NIKE slogan so I just do it. Thus I made the stupid choice of configuring for RAID 0 (the thing is still slow but data is unrecoverable if something happens.the price of greed).
I have had my data for many, many, many years. It may (I hope none of the drives failed but how would I know, the unit gives no useful feedback) work after 24 hours; it seems the cryptic light message I get means it is scanning corrupted drives. Now I am surfing the web for information and it seems the NAS200 loves to do this. Their tech support is stupid bordering on dangerous from what I have seen and read so far. I unplug it again and see the same thing (this was probably another stupid move on my part). I call LinkSys. I had things on two harddrives and got a 2GB Buffalo Terastation a while ago, which is set to RAID 1. It has been working for almost two years but it is full.
The drives were too hot to touch. If it does not fix itself, I will loose tons of documents, home film projects and family pictures. Apparently, a small disturbance (for example power outage) will totally confuse it. If you do buy it, NEVER call the tech support. 20 minutes.
Maybe I should have left the doors in the back open. The 1TB Seagate drives were so cheap I.I should have known better. Do use RAID 1. So I bought the NAS200 with the intention of moving some of my data and later getting a second NAS200 to backup to. This will be the biggest data loss I have ever suffered.Lessons: Stay away from the NAS200.
Why. 'Power', 'Reset', nothing works. Some Indian dude tells me to turn the unit off for 20 minutes.
